SFA Wind Ensemble
The Wind
Ensemble, the premier concert band in the department, has
performed regularly for convention-clinics of the Texas
Music Educators Association and the College
Band Directors National Association. The Wind Ensemble commissions
new works from outstanding composers each year, and concerts often
feature nationally known guest conductors and soloists.
The Wind Ensemble meets Fall and Spring semesters.
Extremely competitive auditions are held in late August for the Fall
Semester and in November for the Spring Semester.
This
group performs the "core repertoire" of the modern band, newly composed
works, pieces featuring guest artists and chamber music for winds.
The group also plays some of the finest orchestral transcriptions for
bands. The Wind Ensemble meets the needs of students in the Music Education
curriculum, using the literature of the ensemble to demonstrate teaching
techniques. The high level of literature performed in the group also
challenges performance majors.

Repertoire
One of the best ways to identify a dynamic and innovative
band program is to examine the music it performs. The directors of
the bands at Stephen F. Austin State University program repertoire
with a four-fold approach:
1. Perform the "core repertoire" of band music.
2. Perform new compositions, often premieres of work commissioned by
SFA.
3. Perform with outstanding guest artists and our stellar faculty.
4. Balance music for the full concert band with music designed to be
played with one player per part, i.e. incorporating chamber music and
music for wind ensemble into programming practices.
