The A Cappella Choir has set a standard of choral excellence for half a century. The 52-voiced choir, under the direction of Tim King, is made up entirely of resident students from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
The choir sings a distinctive repertoire of a
cappella and concerted works, encompassing choral literature
from six centuries. Under the baton of Dr. King, the
A Cappella Choir has achieved special recognition for performances of choral masterworks
including Requiems by Brahms, Mozart, Verdi; Haydn's Creation,
Orff's Carmina Burana and Catulli Carmina, and
Mendelssohn's Elijah; Handel's Messiah and Dixit
Dominus; Beethoven’s Mass in C, Missa Solemnis and Choral
Fantasy. In the spring of 2007, the entire SFA Choral Department and Orchestra presented the Southwest premier of Richard Danielpour's An American Requiem.
Through guest appearances at the Texas Music Educators
Association, MENC: The National Association for Music Education (formerly the Music Educators National Conference), and American Choral
Directors Association, the A Cappella Choir has established recognition
as one of the finest choral ensembles in the United States. In recent years, the choir has regularly toured Europe appearing in such prestigious venues as the International Music Festival, Marostica, Italy and for Vienna's 1,000th birthday celebration. Most noteworthy was the 2006 tour at the special invitation of the Salzburg Choral Society to join in their celebration of Mozart's 250th birthday celebration. The choir is projecting an Italy tour in 2009.
