Orchestra: Concerto / Aria Competition

2019-20 Concerto/Aria Competition

RULES AND DETAILS

  1. ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to all music majors enrolled full-time and in applied lessons during the semesters of the competition and performance. Previous winners may not enter the competition.
  2. PRELIMINARIES: Competitors will enter in one of four divisions:
    1. strings, piano and percussion
    2. woodwinds
    3. brass
    4. voice

    Each division will have independent preliminary rounds, each advancing a maximum of three performers to the finals. The faculty of each division shall form the preliminary judging panels.

  3. FINALS: The final round for the 2019-2020 Concerto/Aria Competition will take place on April 18, 2020 beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Cole Concert Hall. Finalists will perform complete repertoire selections with necessary cuts in accompaniment to facilitate time. Students must provide three copies of the piano accompaniment for the judges. The judging panel will consist of Dr. Grabowski and two guest judges. One winner from each division will be chosen to perform with the SFA Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 2020.
  4. APPLICATION: Application forms, available online (music.sfasu.edu), must be submitted to Dr. Grabowski by March 2, 2020.
  5. ACCOMPANISTS: It is the student's responsibility to procure the services and arrange for payment of an accompanist for both rounds of the competition.
  6. REPERTOIRE: Appropriate competition repertoire can include either one movement of a multi-movement work, multiple movements of a multi-movement work, or the entirety of a single-movement work. Singers may also choose up to two arias from the same opera or oratorio as their selection. The duration of the selected repertoire must be less than 15 minutes.Dr. Grabowski must approve audition repertoire before the application due date.

    Contestants are not required to memorize their repertoire for the preliminary and final rounds.
